The decision is in. We've established that there's no going back. I woke up this morning to an email saying the kit I ordered was seriously delayed and they would be comping my shipping cost. While from an efficiency standpoint is may be a bit worrying, shipping was like half the cost so I see this as an absolute win. As I settled in at about 12:30 this morning for my first Premier League Saturday, you could just sense in the air it would be a historic day. Up to this point Villa had not won a game at Newcastle since 2005. 2005! For all the non-mathletes out there that's 18 years. So here I am as an 18-year-old viewing the first game of the rest of my life. I just knew, it would be a day.
And a day it was! I tuned in 15 minutes into the game as any diehard fan does, just in time to see Newcastle slot a goal to go up 2-1. But I maintained faith and hope. Not only would this be a historic win, but a comeback win. I was fueled by adrenaline for my new team, a sign of my devoted fandom. As I cranked out 90-pound dumbbell curls like the red-blooded alpha-male American I am, I kept the faith in the squad. The hope however, dissipated.
For those of you who read the title the final score was 5-1. We did not win the soccer game. The defense had major blunders. The offense failed to produce. I did feel validated in my choice, however. A big motivator was the presence of the great Emi Martinez. Everyone's favorite Argentinian crazy person was just that. Running off his line and practically tackling a man. I love it. Analysts may have called him crazy, and they are right. But I love it. That's just the entertainment factor I was looking for.
We seemingly have had two started have potentially season ending injuries, have been thoroughly whomped by a team many picked us to finish above on the table. And perhaps the worst news of all for the Aston Villa faithful is that I'm a fan now. Historically, that's not a great place to be unless you're a masochist who loves watching your teams build your hope up only to rip it down. So, hand up, this one's on me. I'll take a lap coach. But there's a lot of season left. This is a minor setback for a major comeback. We're a second half team. This is the kick in the mouth we needed to fly under the radar. Take your pick of whatever stupid analogy you want to use.
I'll sum it up with this. I was told upon the result that I clearly made an excellent choice. While the sarcasm was obvious, I standby that statement. This state of the Villa address is to remain calm. I feel great about this, I feel great about us. Everyone stay calm. STAY F-ING CALM! EVERYTHING IS FINE. *hyperventilates*
In all actuality though. It's not the end of the world. We got this. Onto Burnley. Villa til I die.
